Even worse i’m Irish i’m supposed to love tea now I can’t go near a kettle because i’m terrified! Do you think I have Kettle-o-phobia? And what should I do?

          Refilling water bottles/purifying water?

          Friday, September 2nd, 2011

I’m in college and my water bottle supply has been running short. To remedy this, I’ve been refilling my water bottles and putting them in the fridge. Only problem is the water I use is tap, and I can’t fit a water filter/Brita device in my tiny fridge.

I’ve been boiling water in my hotpot/electric kettle and once it cools, I pour it into the bottles (there’s also a mesh filter thing at the end of the spout) and refill them that way.

My question is, is this safe? Or am I inviting more bacteria and germ-y critters into my water by doing this?
Edit: I can’t attach a Pur filter to the sink faucet, as I’m in a dorm where the bathroom is shared by 18-20 other girls. Plus, I simply can’t afford it.

Also, I’m unsure of how ’safe’ our tap water is

Cooking range has some scratches from heavy canning kettle how do I remove?

            Thursday, September 1st, 2011

I used my glass top range to heat my mom’s giant aluminum canning kettle (boil water bath) but unfortunately once full it was too heavy to pick up and maneuver under the close range hood so I dragged it off the range a bit and then lifted. Doing so I left a few small scratches on the glass by the heating elements.

            1. Is it still safe to use the heating elements with a few minor scratches?

            2. How do I remove the scratches?

            3. What can I use to heat the boiling water bath canning kettle that is not my range so this doesn’t happen again?

Spilt boiling water over myself! Please help!?

              Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

How this happened is unimportant, I was stupid and in hindsight shouldn’t have done but now I need help! I had a big bowl filled with water straight out the kettle. It was on a tray on my lap and a bit spilt onto my stomach. The shock of it made me jolt a bit, pushing the bowl further forwards and spilling some of the boiling water on my legs.

It hurt and in the shock of everything i just pushed the bowl onto the ground, took off my clothes (cotton dress and leggings) and ran upstairs.

It doesn’t hurt too much at all but I put on some Sudocrem just to soothe it a bit. Then I got some damp paper towels and placed them on my legs, lower stomach and pubic line. It still doesn’t hurt too much at all, I guess just stings a little – thing is, I’ve read somewhere that burns take 48 hours to reach their full level of pain or something? Is it going to blister? It spilt on my inner thighs – will I be able to walk? Is there anything I should put on it or anything I should take?

Please help, I’m quite a worrier!

                  The sound of boiling water?

                  Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Wikipedia says that the speed of sound for water increases with temperature.

But if you boing some water in your a kettle and pour it into your glass to make a cup of tea, you will discover that the speed of sound is slower than in a cup of cold water. The sound of pouring the water even sounds different. Why?
                  *********
Ok, the key is the water is boiling.
                  **********
It’s the bubbles. Boiling water is a mixed state. Even tiny bubbles in the water means that, as far as sound, the water is now a compressible fluid. The speed of sound in water, which is assumed to be incompressible, is far greater than steam, which is assumed to be compressible. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound

This causes a big drop in the speed of sound. Far greater than one would expect even averaging the difference in the speed of sound of gas and the water phases based on their relative abundance.

Would frozen peas boil quicker if you added a small amount or a large amount of boiling water?

                    Monday, July 18th, 2011

If you put some frozen peas in a pan, added some boiling water from a kettle, then put them on the hob, initially the frozen peas would cool the boiling water. Then the temperature of the water would increase until it once again reached boiling point.

Now if you add a small amount of boiling water it will be cooled quite a lot, and quite rapidly, by the frozen peas. Conversely the small amount of water will heat up again very rapidly.

If you add a large amount of boiling water the cooling effect of the frozen peas will be attenuated, but then it will take longer to heat up because of the large volume of water.

So should I add a small or a large amount of boiling water to my frozen peas?
