Heat Capacity of Water – Experiment/Laboratory Report Help Needed?

      Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Using equations 1 and 4 along with experimental result in section (below) calculate a value of the heat capacity of water. Express your answer in units of J g-1 deg-1 ad assume the density of water at room temperature is 1.0gml-1.

      EQUATION 1: q=mCp∆T
      EQUATION 4:E=V²t/R

      RESULTS SECTION:
Resistance of Heating element in kettle: 33.6MΩ
Temp of de-ionized water in kettle before boiling 22 degrees Celcius.
Water took me 3 minutes and 20 seconds to boil

Im really lost and stuck, if anyone is able to help id love not only the answer but the working so i can in fact try to do it again and see what and how the result was obtained. There is no good if i cant work it out myself in the future. But thank you greatly, i need th answer in relation to my results provided above. In the experiment we had a kettle, and measured the resistance with a multimeter and then boiled the water and timed it etc. Thank you for the help in advance – Sarah
Thank you Gladys its appreciated that you put all that time into helping me understand this. The mass of water used was 1L and the voltage in this country is 240 V (Australia). Thank you, more than I can express. I’m having great trouble with chemistry and am trying to have faith in my ability so thanks again.

is it possible to make your own electric kettle?

          Saturday, January 29th, 2011

i will make something kind of an electric kettle/ purifier for my project
it kinda looks like this: http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/9812/75964487.png

i have taken apart an electric kettle to get the heating element (that looks like this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/268404985/stainless_steel_heater_for_kettle.html ) and the thermostats ( http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/287693706/water_ketttle_thermostats_KST168_T.html ) but i don’t know how to put it together,

          i also want to ask,
what is a good container for the "kettle" can i use PVC plastic containers?
what metal can use as my case for the glass?
is Pyrex advisable as the glass inside the case?

i didn’t want to use an electric kettle from the market cause i feel like i’m cheating
and please don’t answer for the sake of 2 points!

electric water kettles left on cause fire?

            Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

I have an electric water kettle at work..If it is left on and forgotten to be turned off, will the kettle go on fire or does the heating element just fade out and not work anymore? Some of my co-workers go bonkers if someone does not stand over the kettle until it is boiled and then turn it off. I say that it will just destroy the heating element and won’t go on fire. Of course I realize it is better to turn it off and remember that you are using the kettle. Does anyone agree with me or am I just annoyed at the panic that one of my coworker’s goes into..She has signs all over reminding everyone of this situation..

Why doesn't an electric kettle give a shock?

            Monday, August 30th, 2010

The heating element in an electric kettle appears to be bare metal. It might be insulated from the casing of the kettle, but why doesn’t electricity flow from the element through the water to the casing (which might be metal) and then if I touch the casing why doesn’t a current flow to earth
